Tony Giglio

Tony GiglioBorn in Valletta on 13 August 1951, Tony Giglio was one of the forwards who contributed to an important period in the history of Valletta FC during the late 1960s and 1970s. A product of the capital city, Giglio went on to spend his entire top-flight career with his hometown club, establishing himself as a committed and reliable attacking player.

Giglio made his First Division debut on 8 November 1969 in a goalless draw against Floriana FC, marking the beginning of a near decade-long career at the highest level. Over the course of nine seasons (1969–1978), he accumulated 108 league appearances and scored 24 goals. His most prolific campaign came in the 1971–72 season, when he found the net nine times to finish as Valletta’s top scorer and one of the leading marksmen in the league.

His first league goal arrived on 27 March 1971 in a 3–0 victory over Qormi FC, while his final league goal came years later, on 4 April 1976, in a closely contested match against Msida St. Joseph. Giglio’s last First Division appearance followed on 18 December 1977, when Valletta recorded a 2–1 win over Marsa FC.

Beyond league football, Giglio also featured prominently in the FA Trophy, making 17 appearances and scoring three goals. One of the defining moments of his career came on 4 June 1978, when he scored in the FA Trophy Final as Valletta defeated Floriana 3–2 in a dramatic encounter. His contribution proved decisive, sealing an important piece of silverware for the club.

Giglio also experienced European football with Valletta, making nine appearances between 1972 and 1978. His debut on the continental stage came against Italian giants Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup. He later scored his first European goal in 1974 against HJK Helsinki, and added another a year later against Szombathelyi Haladás. His final European appearance came in 1978 against Grasshopper Club Zürich.

At international level, Giglio represented Malta at youth and amateur levels. He earned four caps with the Malta Under-18 side between 1969 and 1970, and later featured three times for the Malta Amateurs, gaining valuable experience against strong opposition such as England’s amateur national side.

During his time with Valletta, Giglio enjoyed considerable team success. He was part of the squads that won two League Championships (1973–74 and 1977–78), three FA Trophies, as well as the Independence Cup and Sons of Malta Cup in the 1974–75 season. Individually, his standout year in 1971–72 saw him finish as the league’s top scorer, while his performances also earned him a runner-up placing in the MFA Footballer of the Year award in 1974–75.

Footballing talent continued within the family, as his son, Stefan Giglio, went on to become one of Valletta’s most prominent modern-era players and a Malta international, further strengthening the Giglio legacy within the club.

Tony Giglio remains a respected figure among Valletta supporters, remembered as a dedicated forward who played his part in maintaining the club’s competitiveness and success during a notable era in Maltese football.
